Tony: Pushing Forward No Matter What
“Keep pushing forward no matter what life throws at you. Don’t let your past define your future.” That’s the advice Tony offers to the next class of graduates at his soon-to-be alma mater, Eldorado High School in Las Vegas.
Growing up in the foster care system, Tony had to navigate constant changes – from new homes and families to unfamiliar environments. But throughout high school, he found steady support in Ruby Corona, a Communities In Schools® (CIS®) of Southern Nevada site coordinator, who has been by his side since freshman year.
“Without Miss Ruby, I feel like I would not have been able to do this,” Tony said.
During his junior year, Tony faced serious consequences for a past decision that could have derailed his future. But instead of giving up, he chose to move forward.
And he’s made remarkable progress.
He earned his driver’s license, joined the school’s Advanced Folklórico dance program, embraced leadership roles in student organizations, transitioned into independent living and created a personal budget. He also participated in CIS’ Academy Class, a program designed to help students build skills for college and career success.
After graduation, Tony plans to study engineering at the College of Southern Nevada and mentor students facing challenges similar to his own. He also plans to continue pursuing photography as a creative passion and side business.
I hope to build a life where I can give back to others, especially youth who’ve been through tough situations like I have. I want to create stability for myself, continue growing, and use my experiences to inspire and support those who feel like giving up.
