Christian: CIS Impact Beyond the Classroom

Aug. 11, 2025 Alumni Initiatives College & Career Prep

Christian, a first-year student at Elon University, recently shared his powerful story and the role that Communities In Schools of Chatham County (CISCC) has played in his journey.

Growing up in Siler City, Christian and his family faced many challenges—from financial struggles to language barriers as a Latino household, and most profoundly, the loss of his mother at a young age. Amidst these difficulties, a turning point came when his family met Site Coordinator Maria Soto from CISCC.

He was only seven years old, but he still vividly remembers how Maria became more than a support—she became part of the family. Through middle school and beyond, Maria, along with Site Coordinator Tych Cowdin, encouraged Christian and his brother to get involved with community service, academic support, and field trips that opened up new possibilities.

Christian credits both Maria and Tych with helping him believe in himself and stay committed to his values. Their support pushed him to explore leadership opportunities, improve his academic performance, and pursue college with confidence.

That guidance eventually helped him secure a prestigious scholarship to Elon University, where he is now majoring in Psychology on the Pre-Med track with a minor in Neuroscience.

His dream? To become a research psychiatrist—combining clinical care with groundbreaking research to make a meaningful impact on the mental health field. He traces this ambition back to the consistent support and encouragement he received from CISCC.

Christian’s story is a reminder of the power of relationships and community-based support. “The lessons I learned from Communities In Schools—resilience, compassion, and the power of community—will stay with me forever,” he said. “They remind me that I didn’t get here alone, and that I will continue to be supported.”

He closed his remarks with gratitude to all those who make the work of CISCC possible.

Whether you’re a supporter, educator, volunteer, or donor, your impact goes far beyond the classroom. I’m just one story, but there are many others like mine. Thank you for helping students like me believe in a brighter future.
