Amaya: Changing the World
This year, Terrell High School senior Amaya set a BIG goal—earning a scholarship to the University of Texas at Tyler (UT Tyler).
We're proud to share that she achieved her goal and will graduate high school with her associate’s degree two weeks before walking the stage with her class!
[If I could say anything to my CIS site coordinator], I would say no good deed goes unnoticed. Not only will the universe reward you, but I will.

How did CIS help you succeed and reach your goals?
Amaya: CIS expanded resources for students like me in my school. I became homeless a while back and there were endless tools at my disposal.
Thanks to support from her Communities In Schools® (CIS®) of the Dallas Region site coordinator, Estrella Rodriguez, Amaya received the guidance, resources, and encouragement she needed to reach her post-secondary goals.
How has Amaya grown since you first met her? What CIS supports helped her achieve her goals?
Estrella: Amaya has flourished since the beginning of meeting her. Despite the obstacles that came through her life. It didn't stop her from accomplishing her educational/career goals.
CIS helped Amaya during the time she was homeless, providing her with basic care items and clothes. It allowed Amaya to concentrate on learning instead of battling with the necessities of life.
Amaya's journey is just getting started! Her next stop? A bachelor’s degree, then law school, and then—changing the world!
Amaya, I am so proud of the woman you have become. Congratulations on accomplishing this big milestone. Graduation is only the beginning of your journey. Keep up the good work and never give up!
