Blanca: Taking a Leap of Faith
Blanca’s first memory of Communities In Schools® (CIS®) was when she was in 1st grade in Marion, Texas, and she was introduced to CIS Site Coordinator Melissa Avalos. Blanca and her family had moved from Mexico to the US one year prior.

Ja-Mez: Finding a Guide to a Bright Future
Ja-Mez is about to graduate with his class at Stone Mountain High School – an event that seemed impossible just two years earlier. A childhood tragedy that left him angry and disaffected threatened to derail his life until he came under the wing of Darrell Smith, a caring, empathetic CIS site coordinator working in the school.

Brisa: Looking Forward to the Future
When Brisa was a ninth grader, she wasn’t sure if she’d ever see graduation day. School wasn’t something she was interested in, so she didn’t dedicate much time to schoolwork. Brisa was experiencing some personal challenges, so she was more focused on her day-to-day, rather than her plans for after high school.

Olga: Creating a Safe Space for Students
Experiences of social isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic have created unprecedented challenges for students and families, highlighting the need for social-emotional learning more than ever.
